He was speaking as he launched a public consultation on a Private Members’ Bill today (5 December) to ban these practices in Northern Ireland.
The consultation, which will run until 20 March 2025, is seeking views on proposals which would make engaging in conversion practices a criminal offence.
The Upper Bann MLA has said: “So-called 'conversion' practices are deeply damaging and destructive acts which have no place in our society. They send a signal that LGBTQIA+ identities are wrong and that they can and should be ‘fixed’ or ‘cured’.
“The impact can be lifelong. Those with lived experience of conversion practices have reported severe mental health consequences, including anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. No one in our community should face harm because of who they are or who they love.
“In the absence of action from the Minister for Communities, I am today launching a consultation on proposals for a Private Members’ Bill to ban these cruel and archaic practices.
“I am committed to developing progressive legislation that promotes equality, and that protects and respects the rights of everyone in Northern Ireland. To ensure this Private Members’ Bill is as robust and effective as possible, I am eager to hear and consider a wide range of views.”
