Speaking on the 10th anniversary of the EU referendum, the Upper Bann representative said: “A decade on from the vote to leave the EU, it is clear Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster and the biggest act of self-sabotage in UK history.
“The architects and cheerleaders of Brexit claimed it would grow the economy and cut bills for ordinary families, but instead it is costing us £90 billion every year. That is money that is being cut from public services or taken out of people’s pockets through record high taxes.
“Whilst ordinary people and businesses have suffered a lost decade of falling living standards and higher bills, the DUP received £435,000 in dark money to campaign for Brexit, and Nigel Farage pocketed £5 million as a reward for the damage caused.
“Brexit has also brought chaos and instability to our politics, with the DUP using it as an excuse to collapse Stormont, and seven Prime Ministers going through the revolving door of Downing Street. It has damaged our place in the world, and with it our ability to respond to global challenges like climate change and migration.
“After ten years of this failed Brexit experiment, we must recognise that public opinion and the world around us is changing. By re-entering the Single Market and Customs Union, we can turbocharge growth and remove borders and barriers. Only a full reversal of Brexit will undo all the challenges it has created, however, and Alliance wants to get to that rejoin position at the earliest opportunity.”
