The South Antrim MLA has said: “Engaging and supporting the farming community is vital as we continue down the long road to recovery for Lough Neagh, and this ambitious joint project with the Irish Government signals a turning point on water quality in Northern Ireland.
“Through the Lough Neagh Catchment Programme, farmers will be supported with on-farm advice and grants to encourage nature-friendly farming practices, from tree planting to natural buffer strips, all while significantly reducing nutrient run-off and improving water quality.
“Alliance is working diligently to turn the tide on Lough Neagh, recognising the need to address all factors contributing to the ecological crisis. Farmers are doing their part, and it’s about time that the Sinn Féin Infrastructure Minister brought forward a credible proposal to turn the tap off on NI Water’s sewage pollution.
“We must protect this natural asset, not just for the native species and ecosystems that inhabit it, but also for the livelihoods and clean drinking water that are reliant on the Lough. I want to commend Minister Muir for his endless commitment to restoring our island’s largest freshwater lake.”
