Ms Egan has said: “This is an absolutely disgusting display. It remains unclear to me what there is to be gained by anyone from the defacement of their own community in such a vile way, and whoever’s responsible should be ashamed of themselves.

“There’s no excuse for it. Everyone deserves to feel safe, welcome and accepted where they live and there’s no place here for hatred, racism, intimidation, or bigotry of any kind. I want to make it clear that these people do not speak for the vast majority of residents in Holywood and those right across North Down.

“We will be engaging with police to ensure the graffiti is removed as soon as possible and those responsible face the consequences for it.”
