“Minister Long’s announcement today is a welcome recognition of the importance of early intervention in the criminal justice system.
"Many women entering the justice system have very complex lives and experiences of mental health concerns, addiction, of domestic abuse or other vulnerabilities. It is important to recognise those issues and provide early intervention, in order to deliver improved outcomes.
"This pilot aims to provide a clear intervention point for women on remand to ensure any cycle of further harm is stopped in its tracks. This is a compassionate, but strong, approach led by Minister Long that will help ensure those who need support, get it; and more widely improve outcomes for women, their families and broader community safety.
"Thank you to all who have made this possible, and I look forward to working with others on this pilot programme through my role on the Justice Committee.”
