She was speaking following the Education Minister’s announcement about the impact of the Northern Ireland Childcare Subsidy Scheme since its implementation.
The Lagan Valley MLA has said: “I wholeheartedly welcome the implementation of the Childcare Subsidy Scheme and want to commend all those who helped get it off the ground, particularly Early Years, who’s work, alongside providers, has been instrumental. Their dedication to ensuring the scheme is a success deserves huge credit.
“However, these interventions must only be the beginning of sustained and expanded support for the childcare and early years sector.
“Childcare for school-aged children provides them with space to learn, play and develop alongside their peers before and after school and during holiday periods, and provides parents and carers with vital time for work and other activities. The subsidy scheme must grow to include these children.
“Also, while measures are being taken to provide stability for providers such as daycare centres, childminders, and home childcarers, I want us to go beyond stabilisation and to see a step-change in how we value those working in this sector. They are highly skilled people, who are essential in the running of our society.
“I’ll be seeking further clarity on how departments will work together to ensure childcare workers are fairly paid, have career progression and training opportunities, and feel valued for their hard work.”
