His comments come on the fourth anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion.
“Today, on this fourth anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion, we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine as they defend their sovereignty, freedom and democracy. They have demonstrated incredible resilience in the face of unprovoked aggression, and it is vital that Europe remains united in its support.
“Thousands of Ukrainian refugees have made Northern Ireland their home. They enrich our communities, contribute to our economy and remind us daily of the human cost of this conflict. The war has also had a direct impact on households here, contributing to the surge in energy prices and creating real pressure on families and businesses. Supporting Ukraine is not only a moral imperative, but essential to restoring stability to the economy.
“It is hugely troubling therefore that, despite their rhetoric, Sinn Féin voted against a €90 billion EU support package designed to support a country fighting for its survival against ongoing Russian assault. At a time when unity is essential, this sends the wrong message to European partners and to Ukrainians who have sought refuge here. Turning their backs on Ukraine at this crucial juncture is indefensible.”
