Tackling poverty central to any effort to raise wellbeing standards, says Bradshaw

Alliance TEO spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has said that while new figures show Northern Ireland remains a favourable place to live for many people, some clear inequalities remain which now require greater focus.

The South Belfast MLA has said: “Overall, these results are encouraging. Many people report high levels of life satisfaction, happiness and purpose, and anxiety levels have remained broadly stable. That suggests that, despite ongoing pressures, many people in Northern Ireland continue to experience a good quality of life.

“However, it is clear that this experience is not shared equally. The report also shows that people living with a disability continue to report lower levels of happiness and life satisfaction, and that people in more deprived circumstances also experience poorer standards of wellbeing. These gaps are persistent, and clearly indicate where more focused action is needed.

“Improving the wellbeing of all, right across our society, means focusing on prevention. It requires early investment in the things that give people stability, including good healthcare, secure housing, education and accessible mental health support. These are practical steps that can reduce anxiety and raise living standards, particularly for those under the greatest pressure.

“Overall, this report is a reminder of the dire need for a comprehensive Anti-Poverty Strategy and Disability Strategy, supported by coordinated action from the government.

“Tackling poverty has to be central to any serious effort to improve quality of life in Northern Ireland. Wellbeing does not improve by accident, and if these generally positive outcomes are to be shared more broadly, the Executive must match the evidence in this report with a commitment to real action.”
