Reducing MOT backlog must remain a priority, says McReynolds, welcoming extension of TECs

Alliance Infrastructure spokesperson Peter McReynolds MLA has welcomed the extension of Temporary Exemption Certificates (TECs) to continue reduction of the MOT backlog.

The East Belfast MLA has said: "This is a solution that Alliance has previously suggested to remove the immediate strain on motorists and enable the system to catch up on itself.

"TECs take 5 and 7-year-old vehicles out of the MOT system, much like the change proposed by biennial testing, which the Department is currently consulting on. The re-introduction of TECs has made a positive impact to the MOT backlog and associated waiting times, which has now come down to 30 days on average.

"This progress has also been made with the continued hard work of DVA staff to offer more appointments over weekends and bank holidays, and the recruitment of more vehicle examiners to increase testing capacity.

"Alliance has long been supportive of exploring biennial testing on a pilot basis to improve the overall efficiency of the MOT system and ensure the DVA can sustainably manage MOT demand going into the future."
