Potential job losses at Ulster University deeply concerning and staff must be supported, says Nicholl

Alliance Economy spokesperson Kate Nicholl MLA has said she is concerned but not surprised by the announcement Ulster University will need to cut jobs due to severe financial pressures.

The South Belfast MLA has said that while the scale and timeline of any job losses is not yet clear, Alliance representatives have sought meetings with the University leadership and tabled urgent questions to the Economy Minister.

First and foremost, my thoughts are with the staff of Ulster University who will undoubtedly be nervous and anxious about their employment and what these losses could mean for them and their families moving forward in this uncertain time,” said Ms Nicholl.

It is welcome the University has committed to engaging with trade unions and staff representative bodies to find a way forward that is fair and transparent for all involved.

However, while this news is concerning it is not entirely surprising. Higher education institutions in Northern Ireland have been facing severe financial pressures over the last number of years and the Economy Minister must reflect on the role her Department has played in arriving at this regrettable position.

The Department initiated a review of higher education funding some time ago but have since failed to make the level of progress required to provide assurances about future resourcing for our universities. The review has not moved quickly enough and lacks the ambition and long-term planning needed to deliver a sustainable, long-term and fair funding solution. It also appears to lack the support of key stakeholders essential to moving forward and delivering what we all want – a properly resourced higher education system which delivers for our people and our economy.

Alliance has been pushing strongly for the Department to make progress with the review and ensure all interested parties are fully bought into the process. We will continue to do so, and to ensure our institutions, staff and students are properly listened to.

Alongside the review, I also hope the Minister, even at this late stage, can work with colleagues at UU to find a resolution that avoids redundancies where possible, and to ensure further cuts are avoided in future.”
