OEP evidence indicates pressing need to reduce our impact on natural environment, says Blair

Alliance Environment spokesperson John Blair MLA has said evidence presented by the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) underscores that Northern Ireland's wastewater infrastructure and agri-food sector are placing unsustainable pressures on the environment.

The OEP provided the update to the Committee for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs today (29 May).

The South Antrim representative said: “Safeguarding our natural environment is essential, not only for its own sake, but also for the future viability of our agri-food sector. Without nature, there can be no farming.

The message conveyed today by the OEP was both nothing short of alarming, shedding light on the considerable damage being inflicted on our natural environment on a daily basis by current practices within our agri-food sector and our outdated wastewater infrastructure.

Lough Neagh, arguably the UK's most significant ecological crisis, also serves as a stark reminder of the magnitude of the problem and the harm we are causing to our habitats, ecosystems and waterways by maintaining the current status quo.

We are at a crucial juncture where inaction is simply not tenable. As the OEP correctly stated during today’s briefing, time is critical, and research indicates that without a united effort to reduce our impact on the land, we risk worsening the ongoing environmental degradation. While Minister Muir continues to champion the robust measures that are necessary, collaboration across all sectors to tackle this crisis, such as with the Nutrient Action Programme, is essential.

We must confront the reality of our situation, prioritise environmental restoration, and act decisively to rectify the damage caused. Mere words are insufficient; only actions will lead to a more sustainable and economically viable Northern Ireland.”
