The Strangford MLA said: “This is an attempt to deflect from the complete mess that our current SEN system is in and the annual placement crisis which, once again, remains unresolved as another school year finishes.
“These regulations are ten years in the making. They are long, complex and should not be nodded through without adequate scrutiny, especially when experts have raised concerns.
“We are constantly hearing from teachers and school leaders that the current pace of change within our schools is too fast. These regulations contain a significant volume of information and proposed changes. It is important the committee is given adequate time to scrutinise what has been presented and listen to the concerns of those at the heart of the sector.
“The DUP have held the education ministry for 10 years now. They are responsible for the creation of a system that is not fit for purpose, yet are now expecting other parties to just nod through reforms which have taken a decade to draft.
“Alliance made sure to highlight our concerns with DE officials from early on in the process that it was unlikely that the regulations could be approved by committee for the minister’s target date of September 2026. Whilst officials highlighted their disappointment, at no stage was it flagged that this would cause any major issues.
“It is incredibly disappointing that the minister has chosen to release a public statement slamming the work of the committee instead of reaching out to discuss the matter with members. We remain committed to working with the department, the EA and interested parties to ensure that these key regulations will deliver what is best for children and young people with SEN.”
