The South Antrim MLA has said: “The launch of the Marine Protected Areas Strategy by Minister Muir is a significant step forward, representing an opportunity to transform the health of our water environment.

Northern Ireland’s marine and freshwater habitats are home to rich and unique wildlife, but sadly, much of it is under severe pressure. Restoring and conserving our marine protected areas will not only reverse biodiversity decline, but there is also an opportunity to utilise carbon absorbing seagrass beds and kelp forests to assist us in the fight against climate change.

Just as importantly, the strategy will encourage better management of our existing Marine Protected Areas, ensuring that protections are not just lines on a map but deliver real benefits on the ground and in the water. The Minister has been clear that this work will involve close collaboration with environmental NGOs and other partners, drawing on their expertise and local knowledge to improve outcomes for nature.

Protecting our native species and preventing further biodiversity loss is at the heart of the Alliance Party’s environmental policy. Healthy seas, rivers and lakes mean safer water, stronger local economies, more resilient communities, and a better future for all.”
