The 25 year old has lived in the Borough her entire life and has been a representative for three years. Since joining the Council, Jessica has sat on both the Environmental Services Committee and the Community & Wellbeing Committee. Before entering politics, she graduated from Queen's University in 2021, earning a Master’s in Public Policy.
Cllr Johnston said: “To be the first Alliance Deputy Lord Mayor in the Council’s history is an incredible privilege. It’s an honour to be able to represent everyone in the Borough at this level.
“I want to use my time in office to be the voice of equality, progressiveness and inclusiveness. I have a passion for getting young people involved in politics so that they have an opportunity, no matter their background, to have their voice heard.
“Fitness is a big part of my lifestyle, so I want to promote the benefits of sport and exercise for both physical and mental health. With this, I hope to raise awareness of the Macmillan Move More Programme to encourage people living with cancer to become more physically active.
“Like many families in the Borough, my family has been directly impacted by cancer in recent months, and I want to be able to use my platform to support the vital work of local cancer charities.
“Throughout the coming year, my efforts will be focused on making a lasting impact on the local community, so I am very much looking forward to getting started.”
