Cllr Emmet McDonough-Brown has said: “Alliance is dedicated to supporting the implementation of legislation that upholds minority language rights.

“There must be a recognition of the cherished role the Irish language has in the identity of many people in Northern Ireland, and our Council plays a vital part in creating the space for people to express their culture in a manner that is respectful to all.

“Moving forward, it is essential for the Council to establish a clear language framework that is regularly reviewed. Given that this is already the standard in other parts of the UK, there is no reason it cannot be implemented here as well.

“We have a long and strong record in support of the Irish language, and we wish to see progress made in a way which is fair and reasonable. The implementation of any language policy should be balanced and align with best practices, and we oppose the enforcement of dual-language signage when there is significant opposition to it.”
