Hillsborough Law marks huge step towards justice and accountability, says Eastwood

Sorcha Eastwood MP has said today marks a significant step towards long-overdue justice and accountability, as the Hillsborough Law is introduced to UK Parliament.

The Government has stated that the legislation will include a new statutory duty of candour, requiring public officials to act with honesty and integrity at all times, with criminal sanctions for those who breach this duty.

Sorcha Eastwood said: “At long last, the Hillsborough Law will become a reality. It’s testament to those families who fought for decades despite the indignity they faced. Never again can state cover-ups be allowed — whether it’s the Hillsborough disaster, the Chinook helicopter crash, the Grenfell Tower fire, the UK infected blood scandal or Primodos — this law will change that.

“I’m proud to have played a small part in holding the Government to account on this, but now we need to see it enacted and upheld in full.”

Sorcha was a co-sponsor of the previous backbench Hillsborough Bill and last week tabled a parliamentary motion calling for a judge-led public inquiry into the Chinook crash on the Mull of Kintyre in 1994, pressing the Government to release all related documents and uphold the principles of transparency and accountability that underpin the Hillsborough Law.

She paid tribute to the tireless campaigners behind this change, including Hillsborough Law Now, Ian Byrne MP, and the Chinook Justice Campaign.
