Farage's assault on human rights would undermine Good Friday Agreement, says Tennyson

Alliance Deputy Leader Eóin Tennyson has warned that Nigel Farage’s proposal to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) poses a direct threat to the Good Friday Agreement.

Eóin Tennyson Good Friday Agreement

He was speaking after the Reform UK leader indicated during a press conference earlier today (Tuesday 26 August) that he would seek to renegotiate the Agreement as part of his party’s plans to leave the ECHR and scrap the Human Rights Act.

The Upper Bann MLA said: “The European Convention on Human Rights is a bedrock of the Good Friday Agreement. Any move to roll back these vital human rights protections would be a sinister development, breaching an international treaty and effectively ripping up the Good Friday Agreement.

“Farage’s proposals are not just impractical and unserious but also lay bare his reckless disregard for the people of Northern Ireland. This ought to serve as a wake-up call to those local parties who trade Reform’s populist, right-wing rhetoric.

“Alliance will stand firmly against any attempt to erode human rights, destabilise the institutions of the Agreement and the hard-won progress they have delivered over the past 27 years.”
