The South Antrim MLA said: “I express my strong support for the announcement made by Minister Muir regarding the independent review of environmental governance in Northern Ireland. This initiative is timely and vital, especially in addressing the pressing issues faced by our waterways, including the concerning blue-green algal blooms in Lough Neagh. Lough Neagh is not only the largest freshwater lake in the UK but also a critical resource for local communities, wildlife, and the economy.

“The environmental challenges we encounter in Northern Ireland, such as Lough Neagh, highlight the necessity for a comprehensive and effective governance framework to protect and sustain our environment. I commend Minister Muir for acknowledging the seriousness of these issues and for taking decisive action to look at ways of enhancing our environmental governance in Northern Ireland.

“Establishing a panel of respected experts signifies a commitment to rigorous review and improvement. I particularly welcome the consideration of an Independent Environmental Protection Agency, which I believe could serve as a crucial mechanism for safeguarding our natural treasures, including Lough Neagh, from degradation and pollution.

“I appreciate that the Minister has highlighted the importance of conducting this review independently to ensure unbiased recommendations that truly reflect the needs of our environment and communities.

“The panel's commitment to engage with communities, environmental groups, and individuals offers a platform for people to contribute their insights and experiences, which will help shape effective solutions for the environment of Northern Ireland.

“Anticipating the panel’s report next summer, I am confident that their recommendations will lead to significant actions that can improve our environmental governance and help protect the ecological integrity of Lough Neagh for future generations. Although there are no quick fixes, this is encouraging news for Northern Ireland as we seek to deliver solutions for Lough Neagh and prevent this kind of environmental catastrophe from ever happening again.”
