Eastwood welcomes Hillsborough Law second reading

Alliance Lagan Valley MP Sorcha Eastwood has welcomed the second reading of the UK Government’s long-awaited Public Office (Accountability) Bill, also known as the Hillsborough Law.

However, she warned that families across Northern Ireland must not be let down by delays, dilution, or half-measures.

Ms Eastwood has said: "Time and again, right across the UK, we see the same pattern play out. Tragedy and loss, and then decades spent by families battling institutions for answers.

"In Northern Ireland, we’ve witnessed many examples. From the cardiac surgery unit scandal at the Royal Victoria Hospital, to failures in the cervical screening programme in the Southern Trust, and the families bereaved by Covid who are still waiting for truth and accountability. Too many people have faced the indignity of systematic denial instead of transparency and basic decency."

She also highlighted the RAF Chinook crash on the Mull of Kintyre in 1994: "For more than 30 years, the Chinook families have endured grief, factual inaccuracy, and repeated refusals for a full inquiry, with crucial documents due to remain sealed until 2094. Supporting these families now is essential in order to demonstrate that the duty of candour applies not just in law, but in culture and practice across all public authorities.

"We must now be vigilant as it continues to pass through Parliament. We cannot allow delays or dilution to undermine its purpose. Public institutions, whether in health, education, or defence, must be held to the highest standards of transparency and accountability. Anything less is a betrayal of those who have fought decades for justice."
