He was speaking after it was announced that British Medical Association (BMA) members voted overwhelmingly to accept a 5.26% average additional uplift, which will be backdated to March 2024.
The East Antrim MLA has said: “After months of engagement and negotiation, it’s incredibly welcome to finally see some resolution for senior doctors in terms of their pay.
“Consultants play an invaluable role in the running of our health service and ensuring the highest possible standards of patient care. They are key to addressing a range of critical issues we’re facing, including eye-watering waiting lists and the need for transformative change. They deserve to be compensated accordingly.
“We’re facing chronic staff shortages right across the health service, and this is an important step in increasing retention and making Northern Ireland a more attractive place for healthcare professionals to work and make their home.
“Whilst this is encouraging, I’d urge the Health Minister and his Department to continue engaging with the BMA around other ongoing pay disputes with junior doctors and other healthcare specialists, who’s contributions are equally essential in delivering the very best, most effective care for the people of NI.”
