Crucial we don’t lose momentum on tackling gender-based violence, says Egan

It is crucial we don’t lose momentum on tackling gender-based violence, Alliance Violence Against Women and Girls spokesperson Connie Egan MLA has said.

Connie Egan Violence Against Women and Girls

She was speaking after the launch of the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls: Experiences and Attitudes of 16-year-olds in Northern Ireland in 2024 report. Amongst other findings, it showed 75 per cent of female respondents felt young people would not report gender-based violence and harms over the worry they wouldn’t be believed.

“The findings from this report are alarming- but frankly, unsurprising,” said Ms Egan.

“The endemic violence against women and girls is still extremely prevalent across our community, with some staggering statistics contained in this. They are a stark reminder we cannot lose momentum on progressing the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Strategic Framework and Action Plan.

“Everyone has a role to play in challenging misogynistic cultures. Alliance is committed to playing our part in ensuring each Department does everything in its gift and more, to ensure the safety of everyone across our society.”
