The group's main objective will be to thoroughly review the regulations that oversee dog breeding and the operation of canine fertility clinics in Northern Ireland.
Mr Blair said: “A new Advisory Group signifies an important and necessary step towards addressing the urgent need for improved oversight and regulation in an area that has often been overlooked in Northern Ireland. The absence of sufficient standards has permitted practices that jeopardise animal welfare, and it's encouraging to see efforts being made to correct this.
“This also signifies Minister Muir’s unwavering dedication to improving animal welfare standards in Northern Ireland and taking steps to enhance the safety of our pets. The Expert Advisory Group presents a vital chance to refine our regulatory framework while aligning our standards with best practices and international benchmarks that prioritise the highest levels of animal welfare.
“I urge everyone interested in these issues to actively participate in this process, as valuable insights and experiences are essential for protecting the welfare of our canine companions. It is our responsibility as a society to work towards a future in which animal welfare is prioritised as a fundamental value in Northern Ireland, ensuring that there is absolutely no room for animal cruelty.”
