Armstrong urges benefit claimants to seek advice as almost 13,000 at financial risk

Alliance Communities spokesperson Kellie Armstrong MLA has urged anyone who has received a letter from the Department for Communities about moving to Universal Credit to seek advice, as thousands are potentially at financial risk.

Figures obtained by Ms Armstrong show that almost 13,000 people have received a mandatory migration notice but have not yet made a claim for Universal Credit. Many of those affected are currently in receipt of Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance or Housing Benefit and are now at financial risk.

“For many people, this letter can be frightening. Universal Credit is not a simple switch and missing a deadline, even unintentionally, can have serious financial risks," the Strangford MLA said.

“There are services available to help people understand the process to meet the deadlines and protect their income. No one should have to navigate this alone, and getting advice early can have a significant impact.

“Behind these figures are real people being placed in serious financial risk. The system must be fair, accessible and humane and that starts with making sure people have the help they need to move safely onto Universal Credit.”
