The Lagan Valley MLA was speaking after it was announced that the Executive has backed the UK’s bid to host the tournament in 2035, with Northern Ireland being a supporting nation.

Mr Honeyford said: “The Women’s World Cup is the largest and longest women's sporting tournament in history. This is an incredible opportunity to host it in Northern Ireland, alongside other UK nations.

“Over the years, it has been great to see the huge growth in female sport, and the tournament coming to Northern Ireland will inspire the next generation of players, and hopefully create more opportunities and grow local participation.

“I am very pleased that Alliance Ministers, Naomi Long and Andrew Muir, supported NI’s participation at Executive. This opportunity also allows us to showcase Northern Ireland and our people on a world stage, while offering the possibility of direct economic and social benefits.

“Not only will this enhance our economy through increased tourism and hospitality, but it will also create jobs and promote long-term investments in facilities and infrastructure.

"Sport has the power to unite people and communities, and if we are serious about creating prosperity for everyone, we must seize these opportunities. Alliance strongly advocated for Northern Ireland to host the Men’s Euro2028, and while that effort ended in disappointment, we now have a second chance that we cannot afford to miss."
