Alliance welcomes Lower Ormeau parades decision and calls for focus on reconciliation

Alliance Councillor Emmet McDonough-Brown has welcomed the Parades Commission’s decision on the proposed parade along the Lower Ormeau Road beyond Ormeau Bridge, saying the focus must now be on reconciliation and building a shared future.

Councillor McDonough-Brown, who had written to the Parades Commission before the decision to highlight his concerns, said:

“I welcome today’s decision. I had concerns about the lack of dialogue with local residents and the prospect of reopening a long-standing flashpoint that had previously been settled.

“The Parades Commission has an important role in balancing the right to peaceful assembly with the rights and concerns of residents. Along the Lower Ormeau Road, the hurt and trauma of the past remain very real.

“Reopening old wounds and refighting the battles of the past holds us all back. The Alliance Party’s focus will always be on building a truly shared future, where we move beyond division and work towards a reconciled society.

“The focus now must be on moving forward, building relationships and strengthening understanding within our community. That is how we make progress, rather than allowing the divisions of the past to shape our future.”
