Following a selection meeting of Association members, Alliance has selected Helena Young to replace Andrew McMurray as councillor for Slieve Croob on the party’s Newry, Mourne and Down Council team.

Ms Young’s selection follows Mr McMurray’s appointment as MLA for South Down.

Ms Young has been a lifelong resident of Newry. In her professional life, she has worked in various professions such as retail, childcare, management and training, and also as a domiciliary carer during the pandemic. She has represented the Alliance Party in the area for many years, and previously ran for councillor in 2019 and 2023, narrowly missing out on a seat both years.

Ms Young said: “I am delighted and honoured to be selected as the new councillor for Slieve Croob. I would like to thank Andrew for his work in this role and extend my best wishes as he takes on the new position of South Down MLA.

“My experience working with many community and voluntary groups, as well as being a parent and grandparent, has inspired me to use this opportunity to build an inclusive community that is a supportive space for families.

“I am really looking forward to getting started in my new role as councillor and representing my local area. Joining the Newry, Mourne and Down Council team, my priority will be to assist local residents and ensure the council is actively engaging with local issues, while continuing to build on the work and success of my colleague, Andrew McMurray."

Mr McMurray added: “I would like to congratulate Helena on her selection as councillor of Slieve Croob. I am sure she will be a perfect fit for the role, and I look forward to seeing what she achieves on the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council alongside her Alliance representatives.”
