Women’s Health Strategy needed to address gynaecological waiting lists, says Bradshaw

Alliance Health spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has renewed calls for a Women’s Health Strategy, after a report found Northern Ireland has the longest gynaecological waiting lists in the UK.

Research from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has found around 36,900 women here are currently on a gynaecology waiting list.

“It is disgraceful women are having to fight to have their symptoms recognised to get on a waiting list in the first place, only to wait for years on the surgery they need,” said Ms Bradshaw

“The associated pain that comes with endometriosis can be incredibly debilitating and if treatment is delayed, it runs the risk the condition will worsen. The emotional impact and the effect on fertility can be devastating for women.

“Alliance has been advocating for a Women’s Health Strategy, which should include better resourcing for investigative diagnosis for gynaecology, as well as improved care pathways for endometriosis. We need to get on with this work because right now we are failing women.

“Regrettably however, these waiting lists are another symptom of a health service that needs reforming and is in desperate need of political leadership from a restored Executive.”
