It follows reports that a man was shot in the leg near Ganaway Walk in the early hours of Thursday morning (18 July).
He has been taken to hospital with “significant injuries.”
Cllr Irwin has said: “This is a harrowing incident, and I share everyone’s shock at such senseless violence having taken place in our city.
“My thoughts and sympathies are with the victim and their family, and I hope they are receiving all the support they need as they recover.
“There is absolutely no place for this in our community, or society at large. The perpetrators represent no one other than themselves, and seek to achieve nothing other than inflicting terror and harm on our community.
“I’d encourage anyone who has any information that may help the police in their investigation to please get in touch with them, or report it anonymously via Crimestoppers.”
