Alliance Lisburn and Castlereagh City Councillor Jessica Bamford has said Northern Ireland’s reliance on fossil fuels can no longer be ignored, urging the Economy Minister to focus efforts on generating local renewable energy.

The Lisburn South Councillor was speaking after submitting a motion to Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council calling on the Economy Minister to bring forward an energy plan to lead Northern Ireland’s transition away from fossil fuel dependency.

Cllr Bamford said: “It’s time for Northern Ireland to move away from fossil fuel dependency and focus efforts on generating more energy locally through renewable sources.

“Our reliance on importing energy is what makes us so vulnerable to global price shocks. The rising cost of home heating oil in Northern Ireland is particularly worrying, largely due to ongoing instability and conflict in the Middle East. This issue can no longer be overlooked, and the current increase in oil prices highlights its significance.

“Energy security is more important than ever, and it’s time we start recognising the benefits of enhancing the use of renewable energy.

“Unlike the DUP, Alliance will continue to follow the scientific evidence and call for greener, more secure energy. Now is not the time to roll back net-zero targets and continue worshipping at the altar of fossil fuels.

“Households across Lisburn and Castlereagh are already struggling, and further increases in home heating oil will push many beyond breaking point. We need urgent action to protect families now, and a long‑term plan to ensure energy security.”
