Tennyson responds to High Court ruling on Drumcree

Mr Tennyson has said: “The Drumcree dispute was one of the darkest and most difficult periods in Northern Ireland’s recent history. It caused deep division, serious public disorder and left profoundly damaging scars on our communities. We cannot return to that dark past. No one should view this ruling as an opportunity to refight old battles or reopen old wounds.
“It is important that time is taken to fully understand the implications of this judgment before rushing to conclusions about what it may mean for future determinations.
“Given its significance, the Secretary of State must now carefully review the judgment and any issues identified with the decision-making process. The framework for dealing with contentious parades must be robust, lawful and capable of commanding public confidence.
“Alliance remains supportive of the Parades Commission and the instrumental role it has played in de-escalating parading disputes and improving community relations in Portadown and across Northern Ireland. That progress must not be jeopardised.”
