It comes after the first phase of a deal was signed in Egypt, which could see hostages on both sides of the conflict released and Israeli troops beginning to withdraw from parts of Gaza.

Ms Nicholl has said: “The news of a ceasefire is very welcome, though it’s difficult to celebrate after so much loss and destruction. I hope this marks not just an end to violence, but a turning point in the journey toward justice and a long-lasting peace.

“This deal must be honoured by all sides. Every hostage, Israeli and Palestinian, should be released, and humanitarian aid must reach those who need it urgently, without obstruction or exploitation.

“True peace isn’t written on paper, as we in Northern Ireland know all too well. It’s built through political courage and truly demonstrable moral leadership in the days to come. We send our best wishes and support to all those working to make that peace real.”
