Nelson welcomes Council trading hours consultation following Alliance proposal

Alliance Castle Councillor Sam Nelson has welcomed the consultation to extend Sunday trading hours across Belfast, following Council agreement to the Alliance proposal last year.

Cllr Nelson said: “Following my proposal last year, Belfast City Council agreed to extend Sunday trading hours pending public consultation. This is the next step and the result of Alliance's ongoing efforts to finally see it progressed.

“Belfast is a modern, prosperous city and these changes will not only enable local businesses to benefit from the busy weekends with increased trade opportunities but it will also animate the city centre and give tourists and local families alike more options and freedom of choice.

“Any changes to Sunday trading hours will be complimented by a range of other measures aimed at revitalising our city centre, such as family animation projects and other exciting activities.

“The protection of workers’ rights and support for smaller retailers remain at the centre of discussion around this. It is important to reiterate that rights protections for Sunday workers will not change.

“Belfast is very much open for business and Alliance will continue to work hard to showcase everything we have to offer. So far we have witnessed large support and enthusiasm towards the current proposals and I would encourage everyone to take the time to fill out the consultation and provide feedback."
