Ms Mulholland said: “I am absolutely heartbroken to hear about this tragic incident that has occurred in our community. These are such devastating circumstances for the Hegartys and their wider family circle and my heartfelt condolences go out to them during this impossibly difficult time. 

“Losing a young life is especially difficult and I know our parish and our Naomh Padraig and Carey Faughs GAA community, which Joe was such a wonderful part of, will do everything in their power to surround the family with care and compassion in the coming days and weeks ahead.

“Carey is a very close knit community and we hold all those involved in this horrific accident in our thoughts.”
