Measures need to be taken to improve A2 safety, says Farry

Measures need to be taken to improve the safety of the A2 in North Down, Alliance Westminster candidate Stephen Farry has said.

Dr Farry was speaking after receiving a response from Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd to his enquiry calling for a road safety review following a series of crashes recently on the stretch of road. A 60-year-old man died last month, with several other incidents also occurring.

The response to Dr Farry stated the Department will carry out a review of the A2 and identify if any effective road safety measures could be introduced.

“The response from the Infrastructure Minister regarding a review of safety on the A2 within North Down is welcome and timely,” said Dr Farry.

“The facts show relative to the weight of traffic, this stretch of road is one of the most dangerous in Northern Ireland. Whilst there are very particular circumstances to every accident, there is nevertheless a pattern over recent years on this road. Many constituents have expressed to me their fears about using it in case they are involved in an accident.

“I recognise the constraints in terms of the width of the road and adjacent housing in many parts, and restrictions in terms of budget. But measures undoubtedly need to be taken. Amongst other considerations, there could be measures introduced in terms of speed enforcement, greater signage and better sight lines.

“I will continue to seek regular updates from the Minister on this review.”
