Belfast City Council Fiona McAteer

Historically one of the oldest secular offices in Britain, today the High Sheriff provides support to the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor among other ceremonial duties.

She was sworn in at a ceremony in City Hall yesterday evening (14 Jan).

Cllr McAteer has said: “Being appointed as High Sheriff is an incredible honour, and I’m especially proud to take office alongside my party colleague Micky Murray during his tenure as Lord Mayor.

“It’s also exciting to be able to show the role in a new light as a young, working mother in local politics. It’s so important that women in particular feel empowered to enter public life and make their voices heard, and that comes about by having women in these positions.

“I’m so grateful to be able to support the work of a number of charities that are close to my heart. Being a staunch proponent of Integrated Education and having worked on the Act itself, I look forward to highlighting the amazing work that the Integrated Education Fund does in supporting the integrated movement, the growth of existing schools, and the establishment of new schools.

“Walkway Community Association also plays a vital role in their local community, Titanic DEA, and the surrounding East Belfast area, ensuring that everyone in society has the help and support they need to thrive. It shouldn’t matter where you are born or what socioeconomic background you’re from, you should have the same access and opportunities as everyone else. Again, I am thrilled to promote the amazing work they do.

“Becoming High Sheriff is an invaluable opportunity to show not just my constituents in Titanic, but people right across the city, that Alliance represents and works for everyone, and I’m excited to hit the ground running.”
