It is being investigated by police as a hate incident, who are also looking at possible criminal damage offences.

Ms McAllister has said: “This mural is a sickening display of hatred and intolerance, and it must be roundly condemned by all.

“Those behind its appearance have undertaken this with no other purpose than to stoke division and whip up tensions. This is not who we are and by no means represents the views of the vast majority of local residents.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe, welcomed, and respected in our communities, and I will continue liaising with the PSNI as things develop to ensure those responsible face justice.”
