Integrated Education a powerful way to deliver reconciliation and integration, says Guy

Alliance MLA, Michelle Guy has reiterated the party's support for Integrated Education, following a 'divisive' statement from the Education Minister.

The Lagan Valley MLA said: "We are seeing a divergence in political vision for this place we call home. Alliance are determined to work towards and deliver reconciliation and integration and education is a powerful part of that."

"Others are taking an approach of division and segregation. There is nothing to be feared from Integrated Education and we continue to support the calls for parental demand to be met.

"This isn't just about numbers, it is about the make up of the board of governors, it is about structures of how things are done in the school, it is about an intentional approach.

"We now have a written statement from the Education Minister listing anyone that dared to take a different view to him on Integrated Education. It speaks to a feeling that this Minister simply can't stand anyone challenging him, whether they are elected representatives or not.

"If any other Minister in the Executive published an extensive official written statement listing those that legitimately took a different view to them, quoting social media posts and radio interviews, they would rightly be accused of being unable to take challenge.

"In terms of the Judges decision, it is worth pointing out that an Alliance Education Minister would have made a different decision, approved the integration of the schools in question, in line with parental choice.

"The demand for integrated education is clear, I and my party continue to support that demand being met. It is for the Minister to explain why he believes it should not."
