He was speaking after the Independent Panel on Environmental Governance released its interim report today (17 June).

The South Antrim MLA stated: “I’m pleased to welcome the publication of the interim report, and a particularly noteworthy recommendation calling for the establishment of an independent Environmental Protection Agency, which has been a key policy priority for Alliance.

“Establishing an independent EPA would provide the framework needed for proper accountability and transparency in how we manage and safeguard our environment, allowing us to respond effectively to the environmental challenges we face.

It’s absolutely crucial that we remain focused on addressing our environmental concerns, such as the crisis at Lough Neagh. The findings outlined in the report underscore the urgent need for meaningful change in how we govern and protect our environment. This involves both identifying the causes of the problems and ensuring that those who breach environmental laws are held accountable.

As we face down the urgent challenges of environmental degradation, it’s essential to take definitive steps to improve transparency, accountability, and credibility in our governance frameworks. I look forward to the panel's final recommendations, set to be released in the upcoming months and presented by Minister Muir to the Executive for review this Autumn.

I encourage all parties within the Executive to fully support these recommendations when the time comes.”
