She was speaking following the second stage of the School Uniforms Bill which took place yesterday (3 March).
The Lagan Valley MLA has said: “We have been leading calls for measures to address the crippling cost of school uniforms for some time, and we’re glad that after successive ministers have failed to act, we’re finally seeing progress and the adoption of what have been long-standing Alliance proposals.
“However, as it stands, while there is provision for a cost cap on uniforms within the bill, it isn’t guaranteed and the minister doesn't appear willing to implement it from the outset.
“Statutory guidance alone won't be enough to ensure parents and families are protected from high uniform costs. They deserve that certainty.
“We understand it will need careful consideration to ensure there are no unintended consequences and believe it should be implemented by an independent person or body. We will continue advocating for a solution for both families and schools, but it is fundamental that families should no longer be facing extortionate costs for uniforms."
