Eastwood condemns Government decision to deny WASPI women compensation

Alliance Lagan Valley MP Sorcha Eastwood has expressed outrage at the UK Government’s decision to reject the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s (PHSO) recommended remedy for the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign.

Ms Eastwood said: “Despite admitting to and apologising for maladministration, the UK Government has announced today (17 December) that there will be no compensation scheme for the WASPI campaign, dismissing the PHSO’s findings that women affected were not given sufficient notice of changes to the State Pension age.

“This is a cruel betrayal of the millions of women who have already endured financial hardship and emotional distress due to the Government’s failure to adequately communicate State Pension age changes. To apologise but then refuse compensation adds insult to injury and shows a blatant disregard for justice.

These women were denied the information and time needed to plan for their futures. The Ombudsman’s findings are clear, and the refusal to act on its recommendations is indefensible.

The delays and drawn-out nature of this process have compounded the hardship for millions of women, with hundreds of thousands passing away without seeing justice. This fight has gone on far too long. These women deserve action, not empty words.

The Alliance Party will continue to stand with WASPI women and demand fairness, and redress for those impacted by this injustice.”
