Cllr Roofe has called on other parties to stop impeding environmental protections and back Alliance DAERA Minister Andrew Muir as he takes action to improve water quality.

The Enniskillen Councillor said: “I am dismayed to see the presence of blue-green algae at Martray Lough, it is a sad state of affairs that we have allowed our waters to deteriorate to such a state.

“Whilst Minister Muir is leading the way on water quality, ending the by-ball for NI Water and working with farmers to reduce nutrients going into our lakes and rivers, others are burying their heads in the sand.

“That includes my fellow councillors who only recently were calling for the return of Going for Growth, a strategy that intensified farming practices and has significantly contributed to this ecological decline. It also includes MLAs who opposed Minister Muir when he brought forward proposals to raise fines for repeated and negligent polluters.

“It is time that other parties stop paying lip service to our environment and get on board with the tough decisions that are needed to turn the tide.”
