Blair utterly horrified at BBC Spotlight investigation into dog fighting

Alliance MLA and Chair of Stormont's All-Party Group on Animal Welfare, John Blair says he is utterly horrified following the BBC Spotlight investigation into dog fighting in Northern Ireland.

The Alliance MLA was speaking after the BBC Spotlight investigation into dog fighting, which was broadcast on BBC One NI on Tuesday, 30th revealed a Europe-wide dog fighting network operating in Northern Ireland.

The South Antrim MLA said: “I'm horrified by what's been exposed in the investigation. It revealed that dog fighting is not limited to places far away, it's happening in communities throughout Northern Ireland."

"I'd like to thank the USPCA, the League Against Cruel Sports, and the BBC Spotlight investigation team for their bravery, uncovering this. I also thank the person who first reported the issue to the League Against Cruel Sport’s Animal Crimewatch Service. This tip helped both the USPCA and the League Against Cruel Sports connect their investigations and ultimately uncover an international dog-fighting ring tied to organised crime.

“At the heart of this issue are dogs being subjected to brutal conditions, forced into violent confrontations where they must kill or be killed. These practices are inherently evil, exposing these creatures to severe injury, distress, and in many cases, death. It is crucial to recognise that these dogs are victims as well, suffering in environments that prioritise sport over animal welfare.

"Recognising this, I am introducing my Private Member’s Bill to ban hunting with dogs in Northern Ireland. This legislation aims not only to prohibit the use of dogs in hunting activities, thereby protecting wild mammals such as foxes from inhumane treatment, but also to prevent the abuse and mistreatment of the dogs themselves. Many of these hunting dogs sustain injuries or are otherwise harmed during hunts, often without proper care or regard for their well-being.

“As Chair of the All-Party Group on Animal Welfare, I am dedicated to opposing all blood sports and working to confront and reduce animal cruelty in every form.

"What this investigation has shown is that organisations can't do it alone. I'd urge anyone with information to come forward and report your concerns to the USPCA, the League Against Cruel Sports, or contact the PSNI. It is only by speaking out that we will be able to bring all those responsible to justice and put a definite end to this cruel abuse."
