This pathway outlines the significant reforms planned to improve animal welfare standards during the remainder of this Assembly mandate.
The South Antrim MLA has said: “I’m pleased to welcome the launch of Minister Muir's Animal Welfare Pathway, which signifies a substantial advancement in welfare standards for animals throughout Northern Ireland, whether they are kept as pets, on farms, for breeding, for sale, or for displays.
“There is no doubt that we are a nation that loves animals, yet the issue of animal welfare is often overlooked. This pathway introduces the first meaningful series of reforms since 2014.
“The proposed reforms include essential initiatives such as an expert-led review of current dog breeding laws, examining the case for mandatory microchipping of cats, regulating rescue and re-homing organisations, and mandating CCTV use in all areas of slaughterhouses where animals are kept. It also features a campaign to raise awareness about animal welfare needs and emphasise the importance of responsible dog ownership.
“The Minister’s dedication to improving animal welfare has been evident since he took up the position just last year, and his continuous efforts to meet promises to enhance the lives of animals in Northern Ireland, despite a very tight budgetary situation, are commendable. It’s evident he has actively engaged with the sector, listening to their concerns to determine priorities within this pathway.
“I know many will join me in expressing eagerness to witness the positive effects of these reforms in the years ahead. I also look forward to continuing to work with and support Minister Muir through the APG on Animal Welfare as he progresses toward implementing these reforms.
“Animals depend on us to ensure that they receive a good quality of life free from suffering and distress, and so we have a collective responsibility to make animal welfare a priority.”
