The Upper Bann MLA was speaking following completion of the Final Stage of the Deaths, Still-Births and Baby Loss Bill, which will now enable the Minister of Finance to introduce secondary legislation to implement a Baby Loss Certificate Scheme.
“Today marks a significant step forward to a more compassionate and progressive approach to baby loss in our society with the passage of the Deaths, Still-Births and Baby Loss Bill," Mr Tennyson said.
“The loss of a baby during pregnancy can be a deeply traumatic experience for parents but is too often met with silence or treated as taboo. The Baby Loss Certificate Scheme will ensure that parents and families who wish to have their loss formally recognised can now finally do so.
“I want to pay tribute and add my thanks to the bereaved parents, families, organisations and charities who bravely and courageously shared their experiences with us. Their tireless campaigning to have a Baby Loss Certificate Scheme for Northern Ireland has been admirable and inspiring.
“Alliance will ensure that the Department of Finance brings forward the regulations to implement the scheme as soon as possible. We will also continue to press the Minister of Health to develop a comprehensive Women’s Health Strategy and help bereaved parents to be supported through every step of their journey.”
