Armstrong expresses concern over fare increases for Strangford Ferry

Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong has expressed deep concern over the Infrastructure Minister’s decision to increase fares for the Strangford Ferry for the second consecutive year.

“This is a disappointing decision by the Infrastructure Minister. While the increases may not seem significant, this is the second consecutive year that fares for the Strangford Ferry have increased. It will have a real negative impact on those who use it, especially commuters, students and outpatients attending the Downe Hospital,” said Ms Armstrong.

The MLA for Strangford warned that local residents are increasingly worried that fare hikes may become an annual occurrence, placing further financial strain on those who rely on the ferry service.

Local residents now have fears these increases will become a yearly occurrence. I have asked the Infrastructure Minister to detail the calculation used to determine this hike and what internal efficiencies have been made to offset the cost to local residents,” she added.

The Department for Infrastructure has launched a public consultation on the proposed fare increases for both the Strangford Lough Ferry and the Rathlin Island Ferry services. Members of the public are encouraged to share their views and feedback.

The consultation is open until 26 November 2025 and can be accessed at: https://www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk/consultations/public-notice-proposed-fare-increase-rathlin-island-ferry-and-strangford-lough-ferry-service
