Alliance Party backs dentists' call for urgent action on Health Service dentistry

Alliance Health representatives have backed a call from 720 dentists for action to save Health Service dentistry, particularly in relation to a reform of dentist contracts.

South Belfast MLA Paula Bradshaw has said: "We have been in regular correspondence with dentists and indeed we will be meeting them again next month to try and determine what action we can take, depending on whether devolution is restored at that point.

"Dentists are quite right to point to Scotland when it comes to reform of contracts as an example of what a functioning devolved government can do. In the meantime, we will remain in correspondence with the Department about what proposals it will have prepared for any incoming Minister to a similar end."

East Antrim MLA Danny Donnelly added: "We welcome this clear statement of dentists' ongoing concerns about what is quite simply a lack of viability of carrying out 'NHS dentistry' under current contracts.

"Also, as a party which opposed Brexit not least because it would inevitably lead to unintended consequences, we will continue to work at every level to ensure there is a common sense solution to concerns being raised around amalgams."
