The North Down MLA was speaking following the announcement from the Department of Justice yesterday (6 March) that it has been allocated £20.45m to help speed up and transform the criminal justice system, and £2.19m to an electronic monitoring project.

Ms Egan said: “Alliance Justice Minister Naomi Long is working tirelessly to speed up justice for victims, and I am hopeful that this investment will help to effectively address crimes, enhance support for victims, and deter criminals from committing future offences, involving all those working across each strand of the criminal legal system.

“This additional funding is very welcome as it will go towards tackling delays and enabling essential work to be progressed to help maximise efficiencies within the system. Transformation including digital efficiencies is vital, and the electronic monitoring opens up a lot of opportunities for our justice system moving forward.

“Our Justice system interacts with people at their most vulnerable, and it is our duty to ensure that people going through the system experience a process that is as swift and trauma-informed as possible.

“Transforming our justice system by dealing with crimes effectively and quickly and placing victims and witnesses at the heart of the process has been a key priority of Minister Long, and I am thankful for her tireless and continued commitment towards creating safer communities within Northern Ireland.”
