The Lagan Valley MLA was speaking after a celebratory reception for the competitors at Stormont’s Parliament Buildings on Wednesday (20 September).

Sixteen Ulster athletes won 22 medals across many disciplines, from gymnastics to golf, while competing as part of the 73-strong Team Ireland.

Speaking after meeting the competitors, Mr Honeyford said: “It’s wonderful and incredibly moving to see the joy sport brings to the faces of these young people. Their dedication and determination just shines through.

It’s also important however that we acknowledge the crucial role played by families and volunteers in supporting these athletes and helping them to flourish and go for gold.

Participation in sport has innumerable benefits for every single one of us, including not just maintaining physical fitness, but also fostering friendships, developing inter-personal skills, and building confidence. Those are opportunities that should be available for everyone, without barrier.”
