The South Antrim MLA has said: “This week, we commemorate the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference. We must take this moment to acknowledge that our planet is facing significant challenges that demand immediate action.
“Climate change is more than just an environmental concern; it jeopardises our economies, our public health, and fundamentally, all our ways of life. Recently, we saw the devastating effects of flooding in Spain, where both livelihoods and actual lives were lost. In Northern Ireland, we are similarly witnessing the impacts of climate change, as flooding continues to increase and our agricultural cycles continue to change.
“These challenges cannot be overcome without a unified effort, as climate change does not recognise borders. It is a shared responsibility, and we must all play our part. This is also an opportunity for countries disproportionately affected by climate change to have their voices amplified and heard.
“Beyond the conference in Azerbaijan, there are also many events taking place closer to home to mark the occasion. I look forward to participating in some of these activities, such as DAERA Minister Muir’s talk on the plans for Northern Ireland’s first Climate Change Act and the goal of achieving net zero by 2050.
“I look forward to hearing the ambitious and actionable commitments that will arise from the conference this year. Alliance is committed to playing our part by working collaboratively across all sectors to foster tangible changes from a genuine will to protect our planet for generations to come.”
