Unacceptable we don't have facilities to perform full emission tests for vehicles, says Muir

It is unacceptable we do not have the facilities to perform full emission tests for cars and light goods vehicles, Alliance Infrastructure spokesperson Andrew Muir MLA has said.

The North Down MLA said the Infrastructure Minister’s lack of firm plans to fully reintroduce emission testing would have an impact on public health and the environment. Cars and light goods vehicles under 3,500kgs currently have no full emissions tests, with the Minister stating ‘substantial capital investment in the vehicle testing estate’ would be required in order for emissions tests for them to go ahead.

“It is totally unacceptable in 2022 we still do not have the facilities to perform full emissions tests for cars and light goods vehicles in Northern Ireland, four years after the situation was fully exposed,” said Mr Muir.

“There are implications on public health, not to mention the impact on the environment. A new test centre is due to be opened early next year at Hydebank and will include facilities for full emissions testing.

“Whilst this is welcome news, there are 15 other MOT testing centres in operation in Northern Ireland that should already be providing this service.”
